You call that a scherzo? Has all the joy and humor of a funeral procession… Ok. Here’s an old joke with a musical twist. Mahler is having a drink with Debussy. Gustave has a large stein of beer. Claude has Beaujolais nouveau 1975. Debussy was a forward-thinking man- music of the future and all that. Oh that was Wagner? You don’t say. Speaking of Germany didn’t they have something to do with the First World War? Ah, the war to end all wars. Mahler had been dead for seven years when the war ended. Debussy died about half a year before Armistice Day 11/11/18. Of course the peace treaty so weakened and humiliated Germany that it was ripe for a fear-mongering sociopath to lead them. But back to our story. The ghosts of Mahler and Debussy stop by Shostakovich’s studio in late 1936 to hear him work on his Fifth Symphony. They decide to visit him in August 1975. They visit Lutoslawski and lament-to themselves as they don’t want to hurt Witold’s feelings that his more recent music lacks the warmth and playfulness of his 1957 Concerto for Orchestra. Claude says there is no feeling in Witold’s Cello Concerto. Dmitry corrects him, “Lots of feeling- all different shades of pain and anger.” They pal around, as friendly ghosts are wont to do. Among other friendly ghosts, they run into Casper... Casper Weinberger who tries to explain- in early 2007 - one ghost to another few ghosts- why the housing market is so robust and why Republicans are so helpful to American’s wanting the American dream of owning a home and flipping it to make an obscene profit virtually over night. Los Tres Jovencitos just don’t get it. It seems like something that’s going to vanish into thin air- and they should know. Casper, throws up his hands and says“Ugh... musicians... they just can’t ever understand economics.” The Jovencitos go on their merry way until about 2016 when Dimtry hears about how the Russian leader plans to make his country great again by using America’s people and institutions against itself- kind of like borrowing the playbook of the 911 terrorists. They find a big, presidential-looking guy who speaks and acts like an ordinary American, someone the average American Joe can relate to. They chose someone with a vanity,vulgarity and ability to bully his party its leaders and a base of gun-loving, anti-choice, religious zealots who seem desperately frightened that they may be replaced by minorities with skin a shade or two darker than theirs. Debussy tells this old joke: A French doctor cured a heart attack patient. In just six months, the patient was able to return to his job. A German doctor cured a similar patient who returned to his job in a month! A guy on the sidewalk with a cardboard sign telling the world he was a homeless vet, two guys a few steps away asking for loose change, and Sister, a college graduate with four grandchildren, her daughter’s kids and a son who had disowned her. It had been raining, drizzling really. Still there was no sun. A dull gray permeated the winter air between the rotting once proud buildings. His name was Sal. Debra McCann, she had interviewed a bunch of Oldtimers at a local watering hole the night before. She was no stranger to bars. Her dad owned one. There, when she was still in middle school, she dreamed about becoming a country singer. Might have happened too if she hadn’t been a Westinghouse Finalist in high school. She was all set then to fast track through a double major in astrophysics and bioinformatics then on to a Ph.D., teach, research, win a couple of Nobel Prizes, have a few happy babies along the way. Didn’t work out that way. Debra got hooked on journalism, the journalism of science. Wrote a couple of books. Folks said she was the next Malcom Gladwell. Snow clouded her vision. Something else clouded the town’s vision, their thinking too. People started repeating themselves. You could hardly tell trees from telephone poles. You could hardly tell telephone poles from trees – and vice versa. Something clouded the thinking. Something clouded… By now all the branches had been torn off by the voracious winds. Leaves were the first to go. The biggest accumulations were to the West. In the West Country people remember that “anomalous hurricane which caused so much harm to people and things.” They called it Hurricane Tom, A Hurricane whose name was not often mentioned out of the fear it invoked. Night was fast falling; flying cactuses were even more of a menace. What was truly odd was that unlike wind-borne cactuses, tree trunks and telephone poles were as straight as an arrow totally unaffected by the maelstrom. It became obvious in a thrilling, horrifying sort of way: Machine Number Six was using the poles and trees as anchors in its landing. Then it landed. Its colors were transformed into the most brilliant oranges, purples; the dessert was no more. It was now lush pasture, farmland and forest. The chaos was not nature. It was the force of the spacecraft's descent to the dessert floor. Rumors circulated. Creatures from the Sixth Machine were scooping up the weak, the slow, freezing them for a late dinner, turning them blue. The alien monsters were licking their chops in anticipation of the icy blue treat. In fact at first, Debra thought it was just snow and moonlight. Night was falling faster than the snow. You could hardly make out the trees – or the telephone poles for that matter. In the light of the moon, the swirl of the storm, there seemed to be Saturn-like rings around the moon. The blizzard let up. Stars appeared. A comet always seemed to accompany these events. Oddly enough, there seemed to be an eye on one side of the comet. The color, the predominant color of the speeding fireball was the same as a distant and brilliant orange star which Debra never before noticed. There was a connection between Machine Number Six, this star and the comet. Suddenly the Sixth Machine was invisible. All that could be seen of it were brilliant lights illuminating the new forest floor – and the orange glow of not one, but two comets. She reminded him of his mother’s Zen-like attitude.If you look closely enough, there are no ordinary people.Darlene, his and Debra’s daughter, he wanted her to enjoy life – in moderation, how to be responsible, how to put high standards into action. The little family went for a carriage ride in Central Park.Darlene hummed happily. He heard a cheerfulness in Debra’s voice. Was it something new? Maybe he had just forgotten her naturalness, her joy of just being alive. Maybe it was that their little family was together. ***There was a right and a wrong time to do things.There was a right and a wrong way to do things. There was right and wrong. Maybe he had learned something in the years since as a young teenager, he started feeling he couldn’t think straight. He sometimes was even able- as he had read in all those self-help books- to keep the mind of the beginner. Leaving the park at its north-east end at sunset, before they got on the subway back to Brooklyn, they passed an old, dirty, narrow street where the sidewalks were cracked with age and neglect. Darlene texted Jim’s daughter saying she liked Charlotte’s drawing of a frog. She wished Charlotte were here, then she saw a girl jumping rope who shared a smile with Darlene. Debra lightly touched Frank’s face. There was so much caring, so much gentleness, love in that spontaneous fleeting caress… It was no longer necessary to walk on eggshells.The monsters of his hallucination were vanquished.That goal, so vital, never fully articulated, had been reached. Frank gave himself a little bit of credit for his resilience, for hanging in there, for being able to make his life, his daughter’s life, Debra’s life just a little bit better, a little bit happier… 10%... For an instant Frank saw the Debra he had fallen in love with when they were high school sweethearts. He kicked himself for not having married Debra instead of his first wife. He kicked himself for having divorced Debra. Darlene’s humming brought him back. Frank redoubled his efforts to be here now: He was here with Debra and Darlene. He saw Debra at many ages. He loved them all. Remembering the joy, he saw his best self. Feeling like the story of his ancestors – even though the word struck him as odd, pretentious – was a parable -Aesop could have done something with… He texted Jim, asking if he and his girlfriend wanted to meet. His daughter, Charlotte was with her mother at a lake where the girl liked to draw frogs. Jim said, “Why don’t you come over to our place. We’re having a Halloween party tonight. ***The girl under the piano is dressed as Shirley Temple. Darlene waves to her. She goes to sit in the purple velvet chair with the gold Moroccan sash -to-believeand pillows next to where Darlene has made herself at home. A guy dressed in a gorilla suit sits ahead and to her left on the edge of a three-piece couch. He is observant. A knight in shining armor stands with rubber chain links, a foam rubber spiked ball, very stiff. The barest hint of movement flickers from his dark eyes. Two women dressed as policemen in black shirt sleeve stand silently near the Knight. They hold Billy clubs made of cake. Periodically they take a nibble. Next to them, a firefighter in full gear, face covered by his mask. He slowly does a mock strip tease… as his uniform comes off, we see he is Superman. Jim, dressed as a Wall Street Executive, manages everything with enviable ease. He warmly greats his guests. Frank suddenly sees the hard-to-believe transformation. For a second, he sees Jim from their old drinking days. He puts his hand warmly on Jim’s shoulder, thinking “Will it sound condescending to say ‘I’m so proud of you?’” He says instead, “Jim, you are such a great inspiration to me.” Jim smiles saying, “And you to me. You helped me learn to take good care of myself so I can tap into that seemingly infinite stream of creativity.” It is an effort, but Frank lets go of his judgment that this sounds all too woo-woo. Jim smiles, sort of reading Frank’s mind, “Yeah, I can just see the crowds laughing as I tell them I can dip my toe into the waters of the infinite. Ha. You know, in all seriousness, I can see, have a little mental image of my toe touching that silver, self-renewing, gentle current.” Frank responds to the warm gentle smile while has just lighted and lightened Jim’s face. “Jim, but why silver?” Jim laughs saying, “I’m not up to gold yet.” More guests arrive. Everyone smiles delightedly with each new arrival, each unexpected burst of originality. In terrific costumes, are friends made up to be Jack Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, W. The outfits get better: An ancient Mahatma Gandhi arrives. He is gently supported at the elbow by Abe Lincoln. Moses, Jesus and Mohamed slowly pass back and forth tablets of the Ten Commandments. A Buddha Child sits in the middle of the room, all curious, happy. His seven-year-old brother sits down at the newly arrived – deus ex machina -- upright blonde piano. Honest Abe clinks his glass with a tea spoon. There is a story Mahatma is going to tell: In the process of transformation, a sorcerer in the guise of an eagle is spreading, shedding extra wings. He has the wisdom, the eyes of an ancient owl. There is evil magic. The creature is dressed in a gray robe almost white indicating his malevolence is abating replaced by freedom of thought and motion. He is less encumbered by extra parts which others thought powerful but for him were constraining in what was a vain, exhausting, no longer needed charade. That his hands are small initially seemed a weakness. They are raised in an incantation. His wings are becoming hands. It is a sign of his growing humanity. He has a brilliant white buckle on his gray belt indicating that although he is well on his way to mastery, he keeps the mind of the beginner. They all smile at the innocent, magical tones of Gandhi’s recitation.“Daddy,” Darlene says, “it reminds me of mommy’s favorite movie, Field of Dreams.” But it makes me think of a silver stream, a river of jumping fish. Frank, dumbfounded gave Jim a look. He took it in stride. In slow motion, a silver line of confetti shoots from The Knight’s sword. Its reflection of the moon’s luminosity makes it look electric. An electric look from the previously dark-eyed Knight connects with Abe, Mahatma, soon it connects everyone in a neon pinball luminosity. What was in that punch?They party through till dawn.Golden rays accompany the last guests home.Silver moonlight transformed. ***Frank smiles remembering a line from another story, “what doesn't kill you makes you... sing.” A bemused smile as he wondered: “In all the generations of my ancestors, in the thirty-three thousand tumbles around the sun, had any had the thoughts, the happiness I have now?’ Darlene hummed, then made up a song about beautifully free butterflies. Of all her abundantly varied talents, Frank loved her spontaneity the most.All children had inner beauty.All people had that child somewhere waiting to be beautifully free. Frank knew what he wanted.He was making it happen.And that was enough. Debra had been thinking about a book she was writing, “How Children Avoid Hurt and Catastrophe, Becoming Champion Artists.” She came back to the moment, taking a good, delighted look at Frank. She would have sworn he looked years younger. Frank looked at her having the exact same thought. Then another thought, from another story:Not too many people know this: For an instant there was the usual fear, immobilizing. Then he took a step, then fourteen more. With each step he grew a year wiser. Frank’s wisest Self was in charge. He was doing better now. There was even a twinkle in his mind’s eye: could he help others do better? No longer isolated in his own psyche, his heart sang. Just then, a late Halloween guest arrived. It was Sal, dressed as a slide rule.Debra gave him a hug. They hadn’t seen each other in years. She said, “You know, as a journalist, I’ve seen some pretty out-there stuff. At least this is a Halloween party.” Abe, Mahatma, Sal, Jim, Frank and Darlene were all smiles. The party lasted through the night. U2- named by an astronomer with a sense of humor- always reminded him of the rock band. Band of rocks he would say at cocktail parties when congratulated for discovering the small green planet. He promised himself that, he would find a better name for his discovery- someday. When in a foul temper, he would remind everyone that the atmosphere and surface were made of halogens- poisonous greenish yellow gasses and boulders. "Too bad," he mused, "there are no lamp factories near my planet." Then he would castigate himself for his egotism - as if he owned the little green orb. He wondered if people who had too much money would one day buy small planets the way they currently bought small islands. U-2 had a cult following. They believed it was a portal into a parallel universe. They claimed the name said it all: "Universe Two." Although the discoverer, Asimov, could get his mind around the mathematics of multiple universes, there was something philosophically repugnant to him about the idea. He felt -irrationally-and wondered if all feelings are irrational or are meta-rational- that "We are small enough without having to go and make the scale of things infinitely bigger than infinitely big." No matter. Asimov didn't really have a choice when he was chosen to be lead astronaut on the wormhole mission to explore U-2. There were trumped up charges leveled against him and he faced life imprisonment if he stayed on earth. He knew of ways to escape the prison colony on Mars, but all things considered, he preferred to be an explorer rather than an outlaw. A man with children and grandchildren but whose wife had divorced him for spending more time with his research than connecting to her, Asimov promised to send tweets about his journey. He often kept in touch with his extended family electronically so there might not be much of a difference on that front. The biggest problem he saw was his late middle age crush on Juliyang, his much younger co-pilot- that and the almost continual meteor showers. Unlike those in most parts of the known universe, meteors on U-2 went in both directions. The combination of low gravity and heavy pull from the seven moons created something like Van der Waals effects. This weak attraction between molecules amused him because it always reminded him of geckos whose ability to scale der walls - sounded like Van der Waals - was enabled by this force. Asimov Diderik was Dutch - but nobody cared. Well, maybe a few terrorists who had long memories. Asimov ‘s great-great grandfather Hendrik Casimir had started out aiming to compute the Van der Waals force between polarizable molecules. When Asimov was a small child, he was fascinated by charting the sizes and relationships of different piles of jellybeans. Like his great-great grandfather, Isamov was drawn to history and philosophy as well as science. Though unlike his great-great grandfather, he was interested in all types of history - especially Old Testament history and philosophy - whereas the very old man (he was one of the first successful cryogenic patients who later received many robotic organs was happily working at the ripe old age of 323) focused on the history and philosophy of physics. 323 was a special birthday, as was 121 and perhaps, he mused 4321234. He did want to live forever; there were just so many interesting things to explore. So, inspired in so many ways by Old Casimir, a few decades later, thawing from the semi frozen state, Asimov implemented the plan he had concocted. It seemed no more absurd or stupid to him than any of the science fiction movies of his youth and actually had a scintilla of a chance of success. Hovering above U-2, he directed his crew to collect samples. After analyzing them he directed them to pour chemicals which would combine with the local elements to form soil. Then he created a small star to warm the place. He planted trees - rapid growth variety, brought up the oxygen content of the atmosphere, added hydrogen and water forming clouds, the sky turned blue, rapid phase proliferation of birds and insects he had brought along and in less than a year, U-2 was a veritable garden of Eden. He realized after all this time that he wanted to call the planet "Earth." His diligent team however found no portals to parallel universes and his copilot turned out to be married and faithfully so and not attracted to old Asimov. Nonetheless it was a successful voyage and they returned home to a hero's welcome.
