Blog Post No. 20: Soundscape No. 3 (Tuba)
Carlton Green, my chamber music friend back in high school was the youngest player ever to sub in the Philadelphia Orchestra. His glorious, golden, huge sound inspired me to write him a solo in the first work I conducted in public, during my sophomore year. Carlton had performed Vaughn-Williams Tuba Concerto with our Orchestra 8. (Can you imagine these days of a school with 8 orchestras?). My tuba concerto is dedicated to his memory. Carlton later suffered from mental illness which may have contributed to his untimely passing. My requiem is also dedicated to Carlton and all who suffer from mental illness.
In more recent years l am fortunate to count two tuba players among my friends.
This soundscape was written with them in mind.
